Indonesian FM urges bigger role of ASEAN in world affairs

BANGKOK, Dec 17(TNA)- Indonesia’s Foreign Minister Marty M. Natalegawa has urged the Association of Southeast Asian Nations or ASEAN to play a bigger role in world affairs.
Giving a special lecture on the topic “Geopolitics and Role of ASEAN in Facing Contemporary Global Challenges” at Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok Thursday, Marty emphasised the need for ASEAN to become a stabilising force in today’s geopolitical landscape to help prevent the return of the old Cold War mentality of the balancing of powers between diverging blocs, and instead play a role in championing the stability of relations between all countries around the world, as well as to main what he called, “a dynamic equilibrium” in the global order.
To this end, the theme for ASEAN under Indonesia’s chairmanship in 2011 is “ASEAN Community in a Global Community of Nations”.
The Indonesian Foreign Minister said while there are still many challenges ahead for ASEAN countries in achieving the targeted deadline of becoming a single community by 2015, Southeast Asian countries should also look beyond community building to the role they can play in the world.
During the lecture, Marty also touched upon a number of issues that ASEAN countries should consider, such as the return of traditional security problems and the role the regional body can play in maintaining stability in Asia.
