Russia prepares to mark 300th birth anniversary of Lomonosov

.

ARKHANGELSK, December 16 (Itar-Tass) - Russia has launched
preparations for the celebration of the 300th birth anniversary of Mikhail
Lomonosov, a Russian scientist and the founder of the Moscow State
University, in 2011. Lomonosov was born in a Pomor village in the northern
Arkhangelsk region. At the age of 19 he decided to go to Moscow to study.
In the winter of 1730-1731, Lomonosov joined a caravan that carried fish
to Moscow. He covered about 1,300 kilometers on foot. In Moscow, Lomonosov
was enrolled to the Slavic Greek Latin Academy. He was a brilliant student
and graduated from the academy at the top of his class. In subsequent
years, Lomonosov became a scientist, a writer and the founder of the
Moscow State University.
Last week, a group of enthusiasts set out on a three-week expedition
from Arkhangelsk to Moscow under a private project titled "Fish Caravan-2"
They just want to draw public attention to the personality of Mikhail
Lomonosov who's scientific discoveries are known and recognized all over
the world. They will move with a daily speed of 50-60 kilometers.
The route will run through the territories of the Arkhangelsk,
Vologda, Yaroslavl, Vladimir and Moscow regions as well as the Russian
capital. On their way to Moscow the participants in the expedition will
stop in cities and villages to give schoolchildren interactive lessons on
Lomonosov. The expedition will not fully reconstruct the route covered by
Mikhail Lomonosov. It started in Lomonosov's native village and will
finish in Moscow near the Kremlin walls on December 26.
The governor of the Arkhangelsk region says that everybody who
wants will be able to monitor the expedition's movement in real time
thanks to the space monitoring system. A map will show the exact
geographical location of the "Fish Caravan-2" expedition and which section
of the route it has covered.

. Ice museum opens in a Moscow park.

MOSCOW, December 16 (Itar-Tass) - An ice museum has opened in Moscow's
Sokolniki Park. The prefecture of Moscow's eastern administrative
district says the museum lies on an area of 700 square meters. The ice
exposition itself equipped with freezing chambers occupies a territory of
500 square meters. The museum has a cafe and a place for master classes
and animation programs. The ice museum will be open for two years.
Russian and foreign sculptors used 800 tons of ice and 200 tons of
snow to create the first exposition.
At the entrance to the exposition visitors will be offered warm
jackets because the temperature in the exhibition hall is minus ten
degrees Centigrade all year round.
Guests will be able to visit an ice room featuring all the details
of real life interior: a fireplace, chairs, a mirror, an ice bar with
ice-made glasses, bottles and other utensils and even an ice bed. The ice
figures of animated cartoon characters, extraterrestrials, fantastic
insects, the Pegasus and a dinosaur may be a wonderful attraction for
children.
Those who visit the museum before December 20 will see the birth
of the "North Pole" exposition. Sculptors will cut out an ice tent, a
five-meter-high mammoth, penguins and an ice labyrinth before the
visitors' eyes. The exposition will change every six months. The one that
is on display now is called "The Mystery of a Third Planet". This
fantastic space composition features a six-arm Gromozeka, the young space
traveler Alice, Bird Govorun, a bird who talks a lot, the space rocket
"Vostok" flying into the unknown and a fantastic wall that changes the
outer space.
"Aliens from Other Worlds" exposition tries to answer the eternal
question whether there's life on distant stars and in infinite Galaxies.
Other fascinating expositions will take visitors to the world of
cold icebergs where the silhouette of a dinosaur suddenly appears from
nowhere or to a mysterious cave with stalactites on the walls and a huge
insect, which is ready to attack defending its home.
