Thai PM Abhisit pushes for healthy iodine intake among Thais

BANGKOK,Dec 15(TNA)– Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva chaired the opening ceremony of “Together as Thailand - Boost Iodine Levels, Boost IQ” exhibition at Siam Paragon shopping centre on Wednesday, calling on the Thai people to rally for a healthier level of iodine intake to ease out related intellectual deficiencies.

On the event, Thai Public Health Minister Jurin Laksanawisit said the health ministry has laid out practical steps to manage and prevent iodine deficiency in the population through its 'Iodine for All' policy. This saves pregnant women over 15 months of access to iodine-supplementary pills, free charge.

The health plan also works jointly with community development groups and ‘Iodine Villages’, in implementing Her Royal Highness Princess Sirindhorn’s view on enhancing iodine levels in water consumed in rural areas. Outreach campaigns aimed at rousing awareness of iodine consumption and its value toward intellectual and overall human development, have also been organised.

Abhisit signed a publicised statement to officially launch the event, together with ‘iodine envoys’ or public health volunteers, and reward public departments contributing to the programme.(TNA)
