CITES awards certificates of commendation to Thai agencies
BANGKOK, Dec 15 (TNA)- The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora(CITES) has awarded certificates of commendation to two Thai agencies in recognition of the arrest of a Thai woman who tried to smuggle a baby tiger cub out of Thailand in August.

John Scanlon, the Convention’s Secretary-general, presented the certificates to representatives of Thailand’s Department of National Park, Wildlife and Plant Conservation, and Airports of Thailand Public company Limited(AOT).
A joint operation by the two agencies resulted in the arrest of the Thai woman who had a two-month-old tiger cub packed among stuffed toys in her suitcase.
Airport authorities noticed the woman’s suspicious behaviour and X-rayed her suitcase, to discover the tiger cub that had been drugged.
Although the largest market for smuggled tigers is China, where the animal is considered a delicacy with medicinal benefits, the 31-year-old woman’s destination was Iran.(TNA)
