Army Chief:Emergency decree will definitely be lifted before New Year

BANGKOK,Dec15(TNA)-Army Commander-in-Chief General Prayuth Chan-o-cha affirmed on Wednesday (Dec15) that the emergency decree will definitely be lifted in remaining areas, including Bangkok, before the upcoming New Year festival.
General Prayuth said that the government's Centre for the Resolution of Emergency Situation or CRES is expected to propose the revocation of the emergency decree before the Cabinet at its weekly meeting next week. After that, the Cabinet will certainly approve the lifting of the state of emergency in the capital and the remaining provinces--in time for the New Year festivity.
The army chief noted that the Internal Security Act or ISA--under the helm of The Internal Security Operations Command (ISOC) and directed by Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva--will be imposed in certain areas after the emergency decree is revoked, saying that the Internal Security Act is aligned with ordinary laws, but it allows the military to provide troops to support police in order to ensure law enforcements more efficiently.
However, the army chief revealed that the military will only monitor the national situation and prepare troops in barracks when there is no security threat and the military is then authorised to take action, including declaring certain areas under its special supervision or setting up any ad hoc peacekeeping operation command centre, once there was any untoward incident.
General Prayuth suggested in case that there was any violent incident, the government could re-enforce the emergency decree to bring the situation under control, urging the public to help maintain social order; so, only ordinary laws will be in place after the forthcoming New Year celebrations.(TNA)
