UK envoy summoned over police crackdown on students

Tehran, Dec 14, IRNA – British Ambassador to Tehran Simon Gass was summoned to Foreign Ministry on Monday to be informed of Iran’s protest at British police crackdown on students in London.

Head of the Human Rights Office at Foreign Ministry Ali Bahreini in the meeting informed Gass on “highly sorrowful” aspect of British police’s violent confrontation with the students, which resulted in injury of a large number of them.

Bahreini told Gass that London’s action against some students under the pretext of protesting the rise in university tuition is an outstanding example of violation of citizens' liberties in the country.

He also pointed to the undiplomatic and wrong move of the British envoy in posting an article in British Embassy’s website in Tehran in protest against the Islamic Republic of Iran. He said such an unconventional move falls beyond the mission of an ambassador.

Strongly condemning such a measure by the British Ambassador, Bahraini underlined that he should avoid taking any move beyond diplomatic framework.

earlier, the British envoy in an interview with BBC Persian commented against Iran’s peaceful nuclear program and sanctions imposed on the country./end
