West abuses human rights : Iran HR official

Tehran, Dec 14, IRNA -- Head of the Human Rights Council at Iran's Judiciary Mohammad-Javad Larijani said on Monday the western countries misuse the issue of human rights and that the international community has played passive role vis-a-vis their poor human rights records.

He criticized the western governments for the human rights advocacy gestures while they have registered alarming human rights records.

He said that the Islamic Republic of Iran advocates human rights as a signatory to the international conventions on human rights.

He was addressing Human Rights Day 2010 meeting in Tehran.

Larijani, who heads the human rights advocacy council at the Judiciary, said that Iran is committed to the related documents it has signed on human rights so far.

The meeting of Human Rights Day 2010 was held with the theme 'The Review of Human Rights in the Current Period', and with the slogan of 'Speak Out: Stop Discrimination'

Representatives of foreign countries' human rights advocacy groups and the head of the International Committee of the Red Cross Mission Pierre Ryter were present in the meeting./end
