Canadian chargé d'affaires summoned over Iranian teen’s death

TEHRAN, Dec. 14 (MNA)-- The Iranian Foreign Ministry summoned the Canadian Chargé d'affaires in Tehran to protest the murder of Iranian teenager Yazdan Ghiasi last week in Ottawa.

In his meeting with Canadian Chargé d'affaires in Tehran Dennis Horak on Saturday, Foreign Ministry Director for Iranian Expatriates Affairs Hamid-Reza Shakeri-Niasar voiced Tehran’s objection to the failure of the Canadian government to deal properly with the murder case of the Iranian teenager.

Shakeri-Niasar called on the Canadian officials to investigate the incident thoroughly and announce the results promptly to the Iranian Foreign Ministry.

He also complained to the Canadian diplomat about Canada’s failure to arrest the criminals involved in the murders of two other Iranian nationals who were killed last year.

The Canadian chargé d'affaires expressed regret over the incident and promised to pursue the matter.

The Iranian Embassy in Ottawa had previously sent an official letter to the Canadian Department of Foreign Affairs, calling for the prosecution and punishment of the murderers.

On Saturday, Foreign Ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast said the Canadian government is obligated to investigate the shooting death of the Iranian teenager and to punish the perpetrators of this criminal act.

“They should fulfill their responsibilities in this regard,” Mehmanparast said.

According to CBC News, 16-year-old Yazdan Ghiasi died on Monday, December 6. Witnesses said he was dumped from a car on Booth Street in Ottawa, bleeding from an apparent gunshot wound to the chest. He was pronounced dead later in hospital.

On Friday, the Canadian police said that the investigation into Ghiasi’s death is ongoing despite the arrest of three men charged in connection with the incident.
