Thailand to launch ‘100-percet-helmet-use’ campaign next year

BANGKOK, Dec 13 (TNA) - Thailand’s Ministry of Public Health plans to launch a “100-percent - helmet- use” campaign next year.
Thai Deputy Public Health Minister Punsiri Kullanartsiri Monday held a press conference on the campaign for the use of crash helmets in 2011, aimed at encouraging motorcyclists and pillion riders to wear crash helmets for their own safety.
The campaign will respond to the United Nations’ promotion for the Decade of Action for Road Safety in 2011-2020. Thailand fully supports the UN’s resolution as it is among the 150 member states of the UN. The campaign for the 100- percent use of crash helmets will be one of Thailand’s attempts to support the road safety campaign of the UN.
Mrs Punsiri said that road accidents killed 11,751 people in Thailand last year. That means that they killed 30 people per day in the country and three quarters of the dead were motorcyclists.
Of the dead, as many as 4,800 people did not wear a crash helmet. They did not wear the helmets because of recklessness, disobedience to the law, and concerns about dirty helmets. The minister suggested pillion riders wear inner hats before using crash helmets for their hygiene.
As part of the campaign, the deputy health minister said, her ministry will distribute 300,000 free crash helmets to people in Bangkok, Phuket and Nakhon Si Thammarat provinces.(TNA)
