Thailand hosts Southeast Asia’s food safety conference
BANGKOK,Dec13 (TNA) - Representatives of eight state members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations(ASEAN) met in Bangkok, Thailand, on Monday to discuss regional warnings on food and feed hazards in Southeast Asia.
The Thai National Bureau of Agricultural Commodity and Food Standards (ACFS) organized the meeting for Southeast Asian authorities responsible for food and feed safety warnings. Concerned officials from seven Southeast Asian countries namely Malaysia, Myanmar, Vietnam, the Philippines, Cambodia, Laos and Thailand attended the meeting while representatives of Indonesia were present as observers.
The officials discussed cooperation on their network of warnings on food and feed hazards. The network is a tool under an ASEAN trade agreement.
Under the agreement, concerned officials will exchange warnings on hazardous food and agricultural products and assess situations and the levels of their hazards.
Sakchai Sriboonsue, the director of the National Bureau of Agricultural Commodity and Food Standards, said that Thailand was already prepared to contribute to the regional food safety warning network by forming an internal warning network comprising the Fisheries Department, the Agriculture Department, the Livestock Development Department, and the National Bureau of Agricultural Commodity and Food Standards.
The four agencies are tasked with issuing warnings on unsafe imports and exports, cargoes subject to warnings by destined countries, and hazardous goods in markets.(TNA)
