One dead, 11 rescued in Vic boat accident
A man has been killed and another saved in a dramatic rescue after a fishing boat
upturned in Victoria's Port Phillip Bay.
Ten people were thrown into the water and two men were trapped inside the 10-metre
boat when it upturned after it was hit by a freak wave at Point Nepean just before
4pm (AEDT) on Sunday.
A nearby dive boat rescued the 10 from a life raft.
One of the two men trapped inside the stricken vessel died and another was pulled to
safety by a dive instructor, Dive Victoria operator Jason Salter said.
Mr Salter said dive instructor Bryon Marshall risked his life to search the boat for
the two people unaccounted for.
"The rescue chopper wasn't prepared to put anyone in the water to go in and have a
look inside the boat so my guy went in and if it weren't for him going in I don't
think that guy would have survived," he told AAP.
Mr Salter said the other man could not have been saved.
"The other person was located but was unable to be removed from the vessel," he said.
"They were deceased on arrival and they were entangled on lines and ropes and all
sorts of stuff and were drowned by the time we had arrived."
He said the rescued man was conscious and talking when he was winched to safety by a
rescue helicopter.
The boat had quickly submerged when he and the other man were trapped inside the
hull, he said.
Mr Salter said the actions of his dive instructor were heroic.
"(He's) absolutely heroic, he's a strong guy in the water, but still to put your
life at risk to help another - he did that without question and this person is alive
now because of his effort."
