Thai Public Health Ministry vigilant for possible avian flu outbreak

BANGKOK,Dec12(TNA)-Thailand’s Public Health Ministry has assigned public health offices nationwide to stay alert for possible outbreak of avian flu during the cold climate.
The Permanent-secretary of the Public Health Ministry Dr. Paijit Warachit revealed that the drop in temperatures during the period will extend the lifespan of the virus strand H5N1, increasing the probability of contagiousness of the virus.
He said even though Thailand has been free of the virus for four years to date, it is imperative to take note that the factors that contribute to the infection—stray birds that carry the infection and infected patient and deaths from neighboring countries.
The permanent secretary of the Thai public health ministry had also assigned all medical facilities nationwide to review medical records of patients who have come in contact with poultry, with reported symptoms of fever, cough, headaches and diarrhea as means to filter them out for close observation.
Dr. Paichit urged infected patients showing signs of the symptoms to immediately seek medical treatment in all medical facilities under the Public Health Ministry, which is fully equipped with antiretroviral drug Oseltamivir.
Thailand’s first report of avian-flu patients was in 2004, with the last case reported in 2006, with 25 total patients and 17 deaths.(TNA)
