US postpones Helsinki Commission on Thai human rights violation
BANGKOK, Dec12(TNA)- The planned talk of fugitive former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra on issues regarding violation human rights to be held by the US Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe (CSCE) has been postponed, said his close aide on Sunday .
Noppadon Pattama, legal advisor to ousted former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin, said that the date of the CSCE forum will be reviewed in January 2011, following the newly elected members of the US parliament.
He said Thaksin in the meantime will take time to proceed with the US visa request for entry and gather new evidence regarding the violation of human rights in the Kingdom, especially on the deaths from the crackdown on the red-shirt rallies.
Noppadon has urged the government not be concerned on Thaksin’s move, affirming that Thaksin will clarify on the issue truthfully, to avoid damaging his credibility.
Noppadon said that Thaksin has written a letter to the commission to show his appreciation for the commission to bring the human rights issue forward, prompting a reaction from the Thai government. This has led to the planned lifting of the emergency decree. He also expressed hope that the pressure from CSCE will urge the government to release the detained red-shirt leaders.
Meanwhile, the former Thai premier has reiterated that Thailand has yet to hold an inquiry regarding killings of the red-shirt United Front of Democracy Against Dictatorship, citing that the Thai government has yet to claim responsibility on the deaths. He hopes that the CSCE will provide a platform to shed light on the truth.
The CSCE, known as the Helsinki commission, earlier invited Thaksin to speak out on issues concerning the violations of human rights, the crackdown on protesters in April- May and the southern unrest in deep south, initially scheduled on December 16th 2010.
