India-Germany target nuclear co-op

Berlin, Dec 12, IRNA -- India is interested in cooperating with Germany in the civilian nuclear sector, said visiting Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Saturday evening.

Speaking at a press briefing with Chancellor Angela Merkel at the chancellery, Singh stressed New Delhi's interest in cooperating with Germany in the area of civilian nuclear energy.

He hailed Germany's supportive role in the 45-nation Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG) which approved the controversial US-India nuclear accord two years ago.

Singh said his meeting with Merkel focused also on promoting cooperation in the area of renewable energy and energy efficiency.

Meanwhile, Merkel vowed Berlin's readiness to deepen its strategic partnership with New Delhi which included also boosting the transfer of technology.

She reiterated this could also involve working together on the peaceful use of nuclear energy and stepping up military cooperation.

India has reportedly a flourishing and largely indigenous nuclear power program and expects to have 20,000 MWe nuclear capacity on line by 2020 and 63,000 MWe by 2032.

It aims to supply 25 percent of electricity from nuclear power by 2050.

Since India did not sign the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) because of its atomic weapons program, it was for 34 years largely excluded from trade in nuclear plant or materials which has hampered its development of civil nuclear energy until 2009./end
