Thai Muslims celebrate Islamic New Year

PHUKET, Dec11 (TNA) - Thai Muslims are celebrating the Islamic New Year, with Thailand’s Chularajamontri (Sheikh ul-Islam) presiding over a ceremony to launch the two-day New Year festival in the southern resort Phuket Province.
The Thai Muslim spiritual leader said that the festival, which kicked off Friday (Dec 10), was organised for Thai Muslims to not only celebrate the Islamic New Year, but also learn the Islamic history and the Islamic significance, noting that the festival is also aimed at promoting unity and the Islamic ways of life among the local Muslim younger generations.
The two-day event includes a religious exhibition, a Quran recitation, lectures on the Islamic New Year and other religious issues, as well as stage performances, the presentation of awards to outstanding Thai mosques and the distribution of Islamic calendars to Muslim visitors. (TNA)
