Former European leaders urge EU sanctions over Zionist settlements

Berlin, Dec 11, IRNA -- A group of former European leaders called on the European Union to impose sanctions over the defiance of the Zionist regime to stop settlement construction activities ahead of next week's EU summit in Brussels, news reports said here Friday.
In an strongly worded letter sent Thursday to the leadership of the European Union and the governments of the EU's 27 member states, the signatories, including former heads of states and governments, said the Zionist settlement policy posed an 'existential threat' to the two-state solution.
The EU summit on Thursday has to threaten concrete actions, if 'Israel' continues to snub demands for halting settlement construction, said the former leaders, among them ex-German president Richard von Weizsaecker, former chancellor Helmut Schmidt and ex-EU foreign policy Chief Javier Solana.
The group drew up a number of recommendations for the present EU leadership during a meeting in London on November 11.
The latest letter comes in the wake of a decision by the governments of South American countries, including Brazil, Chile and Argentina, to recognize a Palestinian state within the 1967 borders.
The release of the letter follows also the announcement by the American administration, saying it would no longer ask the illegal Jewish state to end its settlement activities./end
