ASEAN forges for AEC
BANGKOK,Dec10(TNA)-Commerce attachés of member countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) have joined hands to push for the successful formation of the ASEAN Economic Community or AEC by the year 2015.
Thailand’s Director-general of the Department Export Promotion Nantawan Sakuntanak, in her capacity as the chair of a meeting with the ASEAN commerce delegates, said that the meeting on Thursday (Dec9) was aimed to exchange views and knowledge in investment and trade in the 10-nation grouping to spur regional trade and investment. Nantawan revealed that a website has been launched to disseminate and exchange information to meet the goal.
The AEC is an ASEAN initiative aimed to ensure a free flow of labor and capital. As a country included in the AEC, Thailand is striving to increase its intra-regional trade by 25 percent over the next five years, from its current standing at 20 percent.
Meanwhile, Thai exports to other ASEAN member countries have increased, diverting from its traditional major markets in the US, Europe and Japan. The Ministry of Commerce has set a target of Thai exports to ASEAN worth US$44 billion during the targeted period.(TNA)
