Thai PM:Emergency decree is likely to be lifted before New Year

BANGKOK, Dec10(TNA)-Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva confimed
on Friday (Dec 10) that he is considering to revoke the emergency decree imposed in Bangkok and surrounding provinces before the upcoming New Year festival.

Abhisit said that his administration will implement other laws after the emergency decree is lifted, namely the Internal Security Act (ISA), as the government's Center for the Resolution of Emergency Situation (CRES) will also be disbanded and will be replaced with a new centre under the Internal Security Operating Command (ISOC).

The Democrat premier acknowledged that the Cabinet will consider the revocation of the emergency decree, as recommended by CRES, at its next meeting on December 14, insisting that the transfer of authority from troops back to police after the state of emergency is lifted is not a matter of concerns, as police also played a vital role in coordinating with various groups to ensure order during political protests in the country.

Abhisit also said that a House dissolution is now possible given three conditions, including a stable Thai economy, well preparations for a new general election and social peace and order. The premier noted that the new general election is likely to take place during March- April 2011 following the completion of constitutional amendments.

Meanwhile, the Royal Thai Police said local police forces have been prepared to enforce measures under the Internal Security Act--which will be in place after the emergency decree is lifted.END
