Thai workers to get 8-17 baht wage hike

BANGKOK,Dec9(TNA)-Thailand's tripartite National Wage Committee agreed on Thursday (Dec9) to raise minimum wages for local workers throughout the country by 8-17 baht or 11 baht a day on average.

Permanent Secretary for Labour Somkiart Chayasriwong announced the decision today, giving some examples that workers in the southern resort Phuket Province will get a 17-baht pay rise, from 204 baht currently to 221 baht daily--the highest compared to those in all other provinces; while those in Bangkok and surrounding provinces will get an 11-baht wage hike a day to 215 baht.

Workers in seven provinces, including Phayao (พะเยา), Si Sa Ket, Amnat Charoen, Nakhon Sawan , Petchabun, Uthai Thani and Prachuap Khiri Khan, will, on the other hand, receive the lowest wage hike by only 8 baht a day to 159 baht.

The senior labour official noted that the new minimum wage hike, expected to take effect from January 1, 2011 if finally approved by the Cabinet, will benefit some four million workers, half of them are immigrant workforces, and that an additional 14.69 billion baht cashes are expected to be changed hands in the Thai economy in the wake of the new wage rise--which will further boost the national economy.(TNA)
