.Two unusual sculptures to be installed in Taganrog.
ROSTOV-ON-DON, southern Russia, November 29 (Itar-Tass) - Sculptors
and painters in Taganrog, a city in southern Russia, suggest that the
world's smallest and biggest sculptures be unveiled in their native city.
The projects were presented in a photo album titled "Taganrog with Love."
More than 40 Taganrog painters, sculptors and architects worked
over the album. The smallest street monument - just eight centimeters high
- is devoted to the Azov anchovy, a small fish from the Anchovy family,
which can be found in abundance in the Azov Sea. According to the
designer's concept, the fish will be made of titanium and will be fused
into a glass cube. If it appears, the monument to the Azov anchovy will be
just three centimeters smaller than the 11-centimeter statue of
Chizhik-Pyzhik on the bank of the Fontanka River in St. Petersburg.
Thieves have stolen Chizhik-Pyzhik from its pedestal several times. The
bird miniature in Taganrog will be equipped with anti-vandal mechanisms.
The other proposal by Taganrog sculptors is throwing a glove to the
Brazilian capital of Rio de Janeiro, a home to the 38-meter high statue of
Christ the Redeemer. The residents of Taganrog have called their project
"Christ Our Lord who walks on water as well as on land. According to the
concept, the 130-meter-high statue is to be built on the Cherepakha
(Turtle) Island that is practically invisible from the shore of the Gulf
of Taganrog. That will create an illusion that the monumental statue rises
from water. At the moment, the highest monument in Russia is the statue
of Peter the Great built on a sand island in Moscow by sculptor Zurab
Tsereteli. It is 98 meters high.
Taganrog's intellectuals believe that these projects will help
attracting more tourists to the city, which is famous for its 19th-20th
century architecture and also for being the birthplace of Russian writer
Anton Chekhov.
