More slimming products recalled
More slimming products have been recalled after they were found to contain an
undisclosed prescription-only drug, itself pulled from the market over safety
concerns.
Pharmaceutical company Abbott announced in October it was withdrawing its drug
sibutramine, after research showed it could increase an overweight person's risk of
heart attack or stroke.
Three slimming products - Moti Angel Coffee, Sumabe Acai Berry Coffee and Leptin
weight-loss chocolate - were pulled from store shelves later in October after they
were found to contain undisclosed amounts of the drug.
More products have now been identified and Food Standards Australia New Zealand
(FSANZ) has announced a nationwide recall of the brands Leptin Green Coffee, Leptin
Slimming Coffee (Rose Curve), MyLeptin Weight Loss Jelly and Lose Weight Coffee.
These products have been sold in Australia via the internet.
"The affected product was available for sale online and distributed directly to
consumers through postal orders," a FSANZ spokesperson said.
"Customers are advised not to consume the product (and) any consumers concerned
about their health should seek medical advice."
Two further products have also been recalled - Weight and Blood Fat Reducing Coffee
and Coffee Fast - products known to have been sold though Asian grocers in Sydney.
"Sibutramine has been withdrawn from sale in Australia by the manufacturer due to
concerns about the safety of the drug," the FSANZ spokesperson said.
"There was found to be higher rate of cardiovascular events ... in obese and
overweight patients using sibutramine than in patients managing their weight through
exercise and diet alone."
