Sri Lankans arrested for illegal entry into Thailand
BANGKOK, Dec 8 (TNA) - Thailand’s immigration police have arrested nearly 100 Sri Lankans in an apartment in central Bangkok on illegal refuge in Thailand.
Earlier Wednesday morning, Police General Pansak Kasemsant, Deputy Commissioner of the Immigration Bureau, led a team of 50 police on a search of 4 apartment blocks following information from InterPol of the illegal entry of Tamil Eelam separatists into Thailand.
The incident was thought to be part of a terror plot in the US.
Investigations revealed, however, that of about 100 arrested people, none of them were Tamil Eelam members, but are refugees awaiting their travel to a third country.
Thai immigration police have held the illegal migrants, comprising of men and women, elderly and children, in custody for further investigation at the Immigration Bureau office.
They will be deported back to their homelands. (TNA)
