ASTANA, December 8 (Itar-Tass) -- Following its accession to the World
Trade Organization (WTO) Russia will hold consultations with its Customs
Union partners, the Kazinform news agency reported on Wednesday, citing
visiting speaker of the Federation Council, or upper house of the Russian
parliament, Sergei Mironov.
He called the completion of negotiations with the European Union on
Russia's accession to the WTO good news, but reminded that the talks on
the subject had lasted for 17 years. "At the best, legally-binding
documents can be expected in a year, however, more problems may arise as
the process goes on," he noted.
"Obviously, we proceed from our common national interests. In this
case I mean the common Customs Union. Russia will keep a close eye and, if
need be, hold consultations with its partners to see to it that these or
those processes are in line with the existing agreements. Life will show
how it is going to be implemented in practice," he stressed.
Mironov is heading a Russian delegation, which has arrived to the
Kazakh capital to discuss parliament-related issues of the Customs Union.
The delegation will attend the fourth meeting of the parliamentary group.
Mironov is also scheduled to meet with Kazakhstan's President Nursultan
Nazarbayev, Prime Minister Karim Masimov, and to address the upper house
of the Kazakh parliament and deliver a speech at the Academy of State
Administration.
