China expects positive answer to initiative on meeting of The Six

BEIJING, December 7 (Itar-Tass) - China opposes the actions, which undermine peace and stability in the Korean Peninsula, Jiang Yu, official representative of the Chinese Foreign Ministry, said at a briefing here on Tuesday.
"We oppose any actions which undermine peace and stability in the
Korean Peninsula. We do not side with any of the countries," she said.
"All countries of the region are responsible for the maintenance of peace in North-East Asia, and we urge all the parties to respond
positively to our initiative," she continued, having in mind the
initiative of Beijing to convene an urgent meeting of heads of the
delegations at the six-party talks on the nuclear problem of the Korean Peninsula.
According to Ms. Jiang Yu, "China spares no efforts for improving the situation in the region, which worsened recently," and proceeds from the assumption that this can be done with the help of a dialogue and talks.
Foreign ministers of the United States, Japan and South Korea held
talks in Washington on Monday, after which U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton urged China to play a special role in the settlement of the situation in the Korean Peninsula and to influence the stand assumed by DPRK.
Commenting on Beijing's proposal to hold a meeting of the leaders of delegations of The Group of Six, she said that a needed basis should be created for the meeting, which includes a number of steps to be taken by Pyongyang.
