Parliament approves Protocol on Marine Pollution Prevention Convention

SANA'A, Dec.05 (Saba) - Parliament approved on Sunday, in its meeting =
chaired by Speaker of the Parliament
Yahya al-Rae'i, a draft law of industrial designs.
At the same meeting, the parliament also approved the 1996 Protocol to =
the Convention on the Prevention of Marine Pollution by Dumping of =
Wastes and Other Matter of 29 December
1972.
After discussion, the government side committed to the parliament's =
recommendations on the convention, and voted on the report of the =
Committee on Water and Environment
in this regard, which the parliament stressed in its recommendations to =
be bound by the terms and conditions of this protocol and its =
implementation and to include its contents
in the legislation for the marine environment and to work on the =
establishment of specialized courts in this regard.
The government side also committed to provided hardware and equipments =
to combat marine pollution resulting from dumping or brining of wastes =
and other materials, and to
rehabilitate specialized cadres in this area, as well as to provide =
half-year reports to the parliament on achievements and measures taken =
in implementation of this Protocol
and other relevant ratified conventions.
The Committee had noted in its report that Yemen, represented by =
General Authority for Marine Affairs, has made an important progress in =
protecting the environment in general.
The committee considered Yemen's accession to the Protocol is important =
and urgent because of the advantages provided by the Protocol for States =
Parties to it, such as the
support provided through cooperation with the International Maritime =
Organization (IMO) and other relevant international organizations.
The Protocol also gives priority support to its States Parties, which =
need cooperation and technical assistance, the committee added.
