Thailand's nationwide floods claim 257 lives

BANGKOK, Dec 1 - Thailand's flood-related death roll on Wednesday was confirmed at 257, while flooding conditions continued to prevail in four provinces, causing severe damage.

Director-General Wiboon Sanguapong of the Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department reported floodwaters have receded in 47 of an overall 51 provinces in the North, Northeast, Central and Southern areas and that restoration work is underway.

Twelve districts of Roi Et, Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya, Surat Thani and Phatthalung however are still dealing flood situation, with about 214,881 persons being affected.

As of Dec 1, Mr Wiboon said, floods and landslides had claimed 257 lives in 29 flood-hit provinces; 93 in the central region, 78 in the South, 55 in the northeastern provinces, three in the Central and 28 in the North. The majority of the deaths, 227 persons, were caused by drowning.

The meteorological service announced Wednesday that a rather strong northeast monsoon prevails over the South and the Gulf of Thailand, with abundant rain overall and isolated heavy rain expected. Residents in Chumphon, Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phatthalung and Songkhla should continue to be alert to flooding conditions. (MCOT online news)
