UN to continue helping Tajikistan oppose drug threat
DUSHANBE, November 30 (Itar-Tass) -- The United Nations will continue
rendering aid to Tajikistan to more effectively oppose a drug threat and
strengthen security of the border with Afghanistan. UN Deputy Secretary
General, Executive Director of the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC)
Yuri Fedotov said this during a talk with Tajik President Emomali Rakhmon
held here on Tuesday, the press service of the Tajik head of state
reports. The UN high official is staying in Dushanbe on a three-day
working visit.
During the talk, the sides discussed prospects for further cooperation
between the Tajik government and the UNODC in opposing a drug threat, as
well as the importance of closer interaction of power wielding agencies of
Tajikistan with its Central Asian colleagues, including Afghan ones. "It
is impossible to cope with these global challenges alone," Yuri Fedotov
stressed during a talk with journalists commenting on the results of his
meeting with Rakhmon.
He positively assessed the activity of the national drug control
agency at the Tajik president set up a little bit more than 10 years ago
with financial support of the United Nations. "At present, it is a highly
professional organization which delivered a tangible strike on
international drug syndicates, and neighbour states should use this
experience," the UNODC head said. "The war of the international community
with drug business has not been lost, as we can hear sometimes it is going
on and I don't doubt that the international community will gain a
victory," Fedotov stressed.
Right after the meeting with Rakhmon, the UNODC head flew to the
southern section of the Tajik-Afghan border. Here he will visit the check
point Nizhny Pyandzh, as well as take part in a border meeting of Tajik
and Afghan "green service caps." The visit programme includes meetings
with leaders of power wielding agencies of Tajikistan, as well as
ambassadors of the Russian Federation and the United States, Yuri Popov
and Kenneth Gross.
As of the beginning of the year, power wielding agencies of Tajikistan
have stopped the activity of 35 organized drug groupings and seized about
three tonnes of drugs, including more than one fourth of heroin. During
joint operations with Afghan drug policemen in Afghan border provinces, 12
major drug laboratories have been destroyed and 50 Afghan drug smugglers
have been detained.
