Pakistani researcher rules out possibility of US strike on Iran

Islamabad, Nov 30, IRNA – A senior Pakistani researcher here on Monday ruled out the possibility of a US military strike on Iran saying Americans want to put pressure on Tehran by issuing threatening repetitious statements.
Talking to IRNA Pervaiz Iqbal Cheema, a professor in National Defense University (NDU) described the statement of US Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Admiral Mike Mullen about the possibility of military action against Iran as a ‘mere threat’.
“I don’t think they would attack Iran, it is a pressure tactic”, he believed.
Mullen's remarks came as US Secretary of Defense Robert Gates had rejected the idea of any future military action against Iran.
Pervaiz Iqbal Cheema, expressing his opinion said that the documents released by the WikiLeaks have clearly shown that the statements of Americans officials are their own perceptions and personal opinions.
“I think the Americans are under pressure from some Arab countries and particularly from Israel regarding Iran’s nuclear program”, said the analyst.
The researcher said that Israel has a large lobby in the US and has much influence over the US foreign policy.
The scholar was of the view that Americans officials have to give threatening statements against Iran to satisfy the influential Jewish lobby in US.
Cheema believed that right now the Americans are fully engaged in Afghanistan and cannot open another front in Iran.
He said that any military strike on Iran would have a devastating effect on the region. “It could involve the whole region”, he expressed fear.
“War is not the positive approach….any war in the region is not even in the interest of United States”, said the analyst.
Cheema also observed that the Iranians are quite capable of respondig to any military adventurist move against them. He said in case of attack they would be able to enjoy support of many countries because they supply oil to many powerful states which the US understands.
He opined that the distrust between the US and Iran will persist till the normalization of relations between the two states.
Both Tel Aviv and Washington have repeatedly threatened Tehran with the possibility of military attack on the Islamic Republic, based on the unfounded allegation that Iran is making a nuclear bomb.
Pervaiz Iqbal Cheema, a professor, is also a scholar of international repute. His articles have regularly appeared both in national and in international academic journals, popular magazines and daily Newspapers.
He has published more than 120 research articles and over 600 other general articles, columns etc./end
