The wait goes on in NAB pay glitch
Disruption for millions of people without cash is continuing, with the National
Australia Bank (NAB) still unable to say how long it will take to fix its computer
glitch.
A number of branches have stayed open throughout the weekend to help people access
money while "good progress" is made to solve the problem, NAB spokesman George
Wright said.
The crisis began on Wednesday due to errors in NAB's data processing.
With customers getting increasingly angry, the bank is expected to make an
announcement on Sunday afternoon which should indicate how long the problem will
continue.
Some customers have gone the whole weekend without access to their money as the bank
reassures people that payments will be made soon.
NAB spokesman George Wright said the bank was trying to solve the problem as soon as
possible but could not say when all of its accounts would be updated.
"Payments are starting to be processed and moved through," he told AAP on Sunday.
"We are making good progress and an update is expected this afternoon."
Commonwealth Bank, ANZ Bank, Westpac, HSBC and Citi have all confirmed that some of
their customers' transactions had been affected by the errors in the NAB's data
processing.
HSBC said transactions to other banks, payroll deposits and direct debits had been
affected.
It said NAB clears payments for HSBC in Australia, as well as other banks.
NAB has been working with the other major banks to fix the problem and also giving
its own customer its full support.
NAB opened 120 branches across the country on Saturday to give customers access to
cash and its call centre is in overdrive.
Fewer banks were opening today but customers can check their nearest open branch at
www.nab.com.au.
The bank has already said it won't leave customers out of pocket through any
penalties as a result of the technical glitch.
