Lord Khalid Hameed chaired the meeting which was
attended among others by Baroness Usha Prashar and Monika
Kapil Mohta, director of Nehru Centre, who lauded the
"outstanding" work done by the Election Commission of India.
"The Election Commission has been doing its job with a
great deal of sensitivity and professionalism," Prashar said.
The Election Commissioner said, before the last general
elections in Uttar Pradesh alone, there were 5.3 million dead
people on the electoral rolls and another 8.5 million voters
listed as missing.
The Commission, which appointed two thousand observers,
mostly form the IAS cadre in the last general election, had
also used video cameras extensively to record evidences of
electoral malpractices.
