Thailand denounces artillery shelling at Yeonpyeong Island
BANGKOK, Nov 26 -- The Thai government has strongly urged maximum restraint from stakeholders in order to avoid an escalation of tension on the Korean Peninsula, after North Korea unleashed a hail of artillery on Yeonpyeong Island in South Korea earlier this week, according to the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Four South Koreans--two marines and two civilians--were reportedly killed in the hour-long skirmish.
Ms Vimon Kidchob, Director-General of the Department of Information and spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said Thailand was gravely concerned about the Yeonpyeong Island incident on Nov 23 and deplores the artillery shelling that caused the loss of lives and casualties as well as trauma inflicted upon innocent civilians on Yeonpyeong Island as a result of this action.
Thailand opposed the use of force along with the threat of the use of force in violation of international law and the United Nations Charter.
She said Thailand strongly urges maximum restraint in order to avoid an escalation of tension which would adversely affect the peace and security of the Korean Peninsula and the region as a whole.
In this regard, Thailand reiterates its desire to see this situation resolved through peaceful and diplomatic means.
On Friday, North Korean also conducted an additional artillery drill, only three days after Tuesday's attack on the border island killed two civilians and two marines, injured 18 and set fire to several buildings. (MCOT online news)
