King Bhumibol presides over inauguration of two namesake bridges, flood control sluice
BANGKOK, Nov 24 – His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej Wednesday evening presided over the inauguration of the Bhumibol 1 and Bhumibol 2 Bridges and a sluice gate of for Klong Lad Pho, a shortcut canal in Samut Prakan, all of which are under the monarch's initiative for a better life of his subjects.
His Majesty the King and Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn embarked on the biodiesel-powered royal barge "Angsana," provided by the Royal Thai Navy, from Siriraj pier at 4.30pm to carry the monarch to Klong Lad Pho in Samut Prakan’s Phra Pradaeng district.
In light brown jacket suit with a white shirt and brown pants, His Majesty King Bhumibol was wheeled from the hospital to the royal barge.
Overwhelmed well-wishers lined up at the hospital and along the Chao Phraya River awaiting him, to watch respectfully in his presence. They waved national flags and yellow flags symbolising the monarchy and shouted "Long live the King" when the barge passed by and upon his arrival at his destination.
Sitting on a wheelchair on the boat, the king placed his right hand on a map projector to mark the inauguration of the sluice gate and the two bridges.
King Bhumibol then watched an audio-visual presentation and pyrotechnic displays on the Klong Lad Pho sluice gate story, the monarch’s initiative to prevent flooding in several nearby areas and more widely in the capital.
The water-gates were used as screens for presentation with colourful illuminations after sundown.
A light and sound show and spectacular fireworks then followed at the bridges.
The ceremony ended at 6.47pm, after which the king and the princess returned to Siriraj Hospital by boat.
King Bhumibol Adulyadej, the world's longest reigning monarch, has been hospitalised since Sept 2009.
The Bhumibol Bridge 1 and 2 were the king’s initiative in 1995 with an aim to serve goods transportation from the Bangkok Port to industrial areas in Samut Prakan and other regions in the country to ease land traffic in surrounding areas.
King Bhumibol granted the name Bhumibol 1 to the northern bridge across the Chao Phraya River linking Bangkok and Samut Prakan, and the name Bhumibol 2 to the southern bridge that links Phra Pradaeng district and Samrong Tai sub-district. The two bridges are part of the Industrial Ring Road that connects Rama III Road to Poochao Samingphrai Road and Suksawat Road.
The mega bridge crosses the river twice and has two cable-anchored spans of 702 metres and 582 metres. It is supported by two diamond-shaped pylons 173 metres and 164 metres high respectively.
In the middle there is an interchange taking traffic to and from Suksawat Road in Phra Pradaeng.
The Klong [canal] Lad Pho Sluice Project was a project of His Majesty beginning in 1995 to develop Lad Pho Canal, a natural canal, as a shortcut to quickly sluice water out of the Chao Phraya River to the sea in large volume.
Originally the Chao Phraya River flowed to the sea over an 18-km distance through the area of Bang Krajao, with the water's journey taking about five hours. Klong Lad Pho sluice gate, since its operation in 2006, helped shorten the journey to only 10 minutes over a 600-metre distance.
The project can sluice water in the highest ratio of 500 cubic metres per second and is the main force to drain the water down the sea in a huge amount during the period during sea rise and when water rushes down from the north annually.
The Klong Lad Pho sluice gate enables the water level to fall some 10-15 cm and helps the water flow to the sea from Nonthaburi, Bangkok and Pathum Thani, and has worked effectively since the Thai capital has survived major flood situations.
The Royal Irrigation Department, in response to His Majesty's suggestions, has also worked with Kasetsart University to develop axial flow and cross flow hydro turbine generators on the Pho shortcut canal. They are now able to generate 5.74 kilowatts of electricity per day. (MCOT online news)
