Red Shirt leader urges no rescinding of his bail
BANGKOK, Nov 23 - Jatuporn Promporn, an inner circle leader of Thailand's anti-government Red Shirt movement, the so-called United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) filed a petition Tuesday with the Office of the Attorney General (OAG) calling for fair treatment in his terrorism case and urging the government agency to not withdraw his bail, according to a senior prosecutor.
Director-General Thanapit Moolapruek of the Attorney General's Office of Special Litigation said Mr Jatuporn and UDD lawyer Karom Poltaklang on Tuesday met him for 20 minutes and submited his petition calling for even-handed treatment after Department of Special Investigation (DSI) director-general Tharit Pengdit reportedly asked the Office of Attorney General (OAG) to consider revoking his bail for interfering with witnesses.
Mr Jatuporn's move came after former actor and Red Shirt member Methi Amornvuthikul asked the DSI to withdraw Mr Jatuporn's bail.
Now under a witness protection programme, Mr Methi said Mr Jatuporn had made a threatening call to him about his being a witness in a terrorism case against the UDD leaders.
Mr Jatuporn said he has not spoken with Mr Methi and challenged the DSI to provide evidence, including a sound clip, if there was something to prove he threatened Mr Methi by telephone. He said he was prepared to go to jail.
Mr Thanapit later said that Mr Jatuporn came to ask for fair treatment and the OAG has been fair to all parties. He added that until now the OAG had not received any letter from DSI seeking to rescind the bail for Mr Jatuporn.
Mr Jatuporn was one of the leaders of the UDD rally in downtown Bangkok during April and May.
The protest ended May 19 after the Red Shirt leaders announced the end of some ten weeks of protest and surrendered to police after bloody clashes with government forces. Most key protest leaders remain under detention with terrorism charges and bail was rejected for them as the court feared their possible flight.
