Russian consulate in Mumbai marks 110th anniversary.

NEW DELHI, November 21 (Itar-Tass) - India held wide-scale
celebrations of the 110th anniversary of the opening of Russian general
consulate in Mumbai on Saturday. That was Russia's first diplomatic
mission in India.
The Mumbai-based Russian centre of science and technology hosted the
celebrations that drew together Indian politicians, businessmen,
scientists and cultural figures.
Russian Ambassador to India Alexander Kadakin read out messages of
greetings of the Russian and Indian foreign ministers, Sergei Lavrov and
Somanahalli Mallaiah Krishna, and St. Petersburg Governor Valentina
Matvienko. St. Petersburg and Mumbai are twin cities. The messages
praised the work of the Russian General Consulate in Mumbai aimed at
strengthening Russian-Indian relations, including at the regional level.
The Russian ambassador said that the opening of the Russian General
Consulate in Bombay (now Mumbai) in 1900 was really historic. He expressed
the hope that the General Consulate would continue guarding the rights of
Russian citizens, protect the interests of the Russian state and
contribute in every possible way to developing trade, economic, cultural
and humanitarian cooperation between Russia and India.
For his part, the Indian foreign minister said that the Russian
General Consulate in Mumbai played a vital role in developing trade and
economic ties between Russia and India.
He added that the celebrations were a reminder that Russian-Indian
strategic partnership was based on historical and diplomatic ties that are
more than a hundred years old.
Mumbai is India's financial and business capital. It plays a vital
role in advancing and developing trade and investment cooperation.

The initiative to hold the forum at the level of prime ministers of
countries, which have the tiger population, belongs to the Russian
Ministry of Natural resources and the World Bank.
The prime ministers and ministers of nature and ecology from 13
countries will take part in the forum's work. They are Bangladesh, Butan,
Vietnam, India, Indonesia, Cambodia, China, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar,
Naples, Thailand and North Korea.
Representatives of various international organizations are also
expected to attend: the World Wildlife Fund, the International Bank for
Reconstruction and Development, the World Fund, the Asian Development
Bank, the World Society for the Protection of Nature, the London
zoological society, etc.
"The forum will discuss mechanisms of stable financing and
international coordination of activities to preserve the tigers. The
conference is expected to adopt a global program for the preservation and
restoration of the tiger population and a Declaration of the heads of
government on this problem.
The tiger, one of the largest predators on Earth, turned out to be on
the verge of extinction in the 21st century. Over the past 100 years, the
tiger population has dwindled more than 30 times: from 100,000 to 3,200
species. Despite preservation efforts, the tiger population kept falling.
The territory of tiger's habitation had decreased by 40%. At present,
tigers occupy just seven percent of their historic area of habitation.
Russia bears international responsibility for the preservation of the
Amur tiger population. Ninety percent of wild Amur tigers live in the
territories of the Amur and Khabarovsk regions.
According to the latest statistics made in 2005, their population
accounted, judging from various estimates, from 428 to 502 species.
