Sarita Phongsri ends Thailand's gold medal drought in 16th Asian Games
GUANGZHOU, Nov 18 -- Thailand's gold medal drought at the16th Asian Games in Guangzho finally ended Thursday as Sarita Phongsri won the taekwondo women's 53kg gold medal by beating Nguyen Thi Hoai Thu of Vietnam 4-3 in the final.
Ms Sarita,19, earned a bye in the first round before beating Kastibas Basbau of Lebanon in the second round (3-0) and India's Latika Bhandari in the third (6-0).
She then earned a draw with South Korea's Kwon Eun Kyung in the semi final (3-3). The South Korean withdrew from the bout due a to knee injury.
The bronze medals went to South Korea's Kwon Eun-Kyung and Samaneh Sheshpari of Iran.
Thailand's campaign at the 16th Asian Games was launched with disappointing start as the kingdom failed to win any gold medals since the beginning of the competition on Nov 13 and chances of winning 16 gold medals seems an unrealistic target.
Favourites unable to clinch the final include Noppawan Lertcheewakarn (tennis), Butree Puedpong (taekwando), and Prapawadee Jaroenrattanatarakoon (weightlifting).
Ms Noppawan who won the junior singles title at Wimbledon in 2009 was knocked out of the first round by Uzbekistani tennis player Sabina Sharipova. Olympic silver medalist Butree lost to Taiwan's Huang Hsien Yung 3-0 in the quarter-finals in the 46kg division.
Ms Prapawadee failed to live up to expectations as she finished third, gaining a bronze medal, in the 53kg division.
In boxing, Thailand's hope for a gold medal, two Thais have already eliminated. Saylom Ardee lost 8-1 to Krishan Vikas of India in the 60kg class and middleweight Suriya Prasathinphimai was edged 2-1 by Narmandakh Shinebayar of Mongolia.
The Thai contingent now at 13th in the medals tally, garnered one gold, three silver and ten bronze medals.
The 16th Asian Games will run until Nov 27. (MCOT online news)
