Green out to put Briggs fiasco to bed

(AAP) - A bulked-up Danny Green will be out to repay his disillusioned fans when he defends his IBO cruiserweight world title against American BJ Flores in Perth on Wednesday
night.

Australian boxing fans were left furious following Green's victory over Paul Briggs
in July, in which Briggs hit the canvas from a glancing punch after just 19 seconds
and failed to get up.
The Western Australian Professional Combat Sports Commission later deemed the fight
to be a "sham contest", declaring Briggs failed to fully disclose the complete
picture of his suspect health.
Although Green was cleared of any wrongdoing, his reputation took a battering among
his once-adoring supporters.
But fans have jumped back on the bandwagon, snapping up tickets to Green's latest
fight to ensure yet another sell-out at Challenge Stadium.
And boxing pundits think Flores, who boasts 24 wins and a draw from 25 bouts, has a
genuine chance of winning, with his price shortening from almost $5 to $3.10.
"To the day I die I'll fight with honour and integrity, everyone knows that and
that's why it's a sell-out," said Green, who is a $1.35 favourite.
"I just want to thank everyone for the support they've shown me. It's been nothing
short than phenomenal."
Green (88.6kg) surprisingly weighed in heavier than Flores (88.5kg) at Tuesday's
weigh-in, both well under the 90.7kg cruiserweight limit.
Flores believed Green, who clocked in at 83.6kg when he defeated Briggs, had erred
in adding on the extra kilos.
"If he went up in weight that's actually good for me because he's fought his whole
career lighter," Flores said.
"So him coming up in weight, he's concerned about my weight and he's trying to come
up and change his way of fighting previously to be more like me.
"If he's altering everything based on what I'm doing, then that's good.
"It's affected him more than it's affected me.
"If we look at both of our bodies, I think the weight's in different places.
"So I feel good about what I weigh and he can weigh whatever he wants."
However, a fit-looking Green was hardly concerned about his weight increase.
"I've been chowing down all morning so I've been trying to beef up," Green said.
"I've had nearly two litres of fluid before I came here.
"I'm trying to be as heavy as I can for this fight.
"I'll probably weigh in a kilo lighter (for the fight) but I expect Flores to come
in much heavier."
Flores stripped naked for the weigh-in, to which Green quipped afterwards: "He wants
to show everyone where the weight is. It's the only compliment you get from me big
boy."
