16/11 Tass 26

VLADIVOSTOK, November 16 (Itar-Tass) - Issues related to helping
sinking ships will be discussed by sea rescuers of countries of the
Asia-Pacific Region (APR) at a meeting that will be held on the Jeju
Island (Chejudo) in South Korea on Tuesday.
Taking part in the meeting are delegations of Vietnam, Indonesia,
Russia, South Korea, Singapore, the United States, the Philippines, Japan
and other Asia-Pacific countries. The Russian delegation includes head of
the Vladivostok Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre Alexander Gorkovenko
and chief of the State Rescue Coordination Centre Andrei Tsygankov.
According to Alexander Gorkovenko, the working meeting will last for
three days. The experts will discuss issues of cooperation in rescue
operations, will familiarise themselves with new rescue equipment and take
part in exercises to practice rescue of seafarers in distress.
Asia-Pacific countries exchange the experience in rescuing people
during shipwrecks on an annual basis.
It is of particular importance for the Pacific coast of Russia: in
2010 six ships sank and 15 sailors were killed in the responsibility zone
of the Vladivostok Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre.
