Powerful cyclone leaves Sakhalin island, ferry services resume work
VLADIVOSTOK, November 16 (Itar-Tass) - A powerful cyclone has left
Russia's Far-Eastern island of Sakhalin, thus making it possible to resume
operations of the railway ferry service linking the Sakhalin port of
Kholmsk and the port of Vanino on the continental coast of the Sea of
Japan.
The ferry line is serviced by four specialized seacraft, each having a
capacity for 26 railway coaches and a hundred passengers.
The Sakhalin-10 ferryboat was the first one to arrive in Kholmsk from
Vanino Tuesday morning.
Another three ferryboats are following it across the Tatar Strait
located in the northernmost sector of the Sea of Japan, a navigation
controller of the Sakhalin Shipping Line told Itar-Tass.
In the meantime, works to eliminate the aftermath of the cyclone in
Sakhalin's power grids is drawing to an end.
Gale and a mixture of rain and snow brought about wire breakages in
six towns in the central part of the island. The press service of the
Sakhalinenergo electric power utility said that twenty repair teams
dispatched to these towns had fully restored the supplies of electricity
there.
