Thai PM holds bilateral talks with Chilean, Peruvian leaders on trade cooperation

YOKOHAMA, Nov 13 -- Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva early Saturday bilateral talks with Chilean and Peruvian government leaders respectively on ways to expand trade between their countries.

The meetings were held separately on the sidelines of the 18th Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit held in this Japanese city on Nov 12-14.

Thanking Thailand for sending two Thai engineers to help rescue miners trapped in the collapsed San Jose mine near Santiago in October, Chilean President Sebastián Piñera asked Mr Abhisit about the plan of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) to form communities by 2015.

The two Thai technicians took part in the historic operation to rescue 33 miners trapped in a gold and copper mine in Chile for 69 days.

Mr Abhisit responded by telling Mr Piñera that ASEAN community would focus on cooperation among its 10 members and would also extend cooperation to its dialogue partners which include South Korea, China and Japan.

On the part of Thailand, it wants to expand trade cooperation with Chile apart from attempts to opening a free trade area (FTA) between the two countries, Mr Abhisit said.

Both of them also discussed Asian currency volatility in which the Thai government leader said the volatility was due to the weakening of the US dollar and Thailand may have to consider adding other major currencies to its reserves, replacing the US dollar in its foreign reserves, in order to reduce the impact.

Mr Abhisit reportedly told Mr Piñera that the current severe flooding in Thailand may lower the projected gross domestic product this year to 7.7 per cent from 8 per cent.

In the discussions with Peruvian President Alan García Pérez, both sides expressed satisfaction over trade between the two countries which had ballooned by over 250 per cent during the first nine months this year.

Both men agreed to explore ways which would further boost bilateral trade while Mr Abhisit was confident that an FTA between the two nations, if signed, would be another channel which could further strengthen cooperation.

Mr Pérez and Mr Abhisit later witnessed the signing of a document, designed for speeding an FTA agreement between the two countries. (MCOT online news)
