China to spend Bt5 billion for China Cultural Centre in Bangkok

BANGKOK, Nov 11 - China is spending about 1.2 billion yuan (almost Bt4.8 billion) to build its cultural centre in Thailand's capital Bangkok to foster relationships and close ties between the two nations, with the foundation stone-laying ceremony taking place Thursday morning.

The centre will be completed in two years on four rai of land (1.6 acres) behind the Thailand Cultural Centre on Rama 9 Road.

The China Cultural Centre will be open to students and those interested in China-related activities so that they can learn Chinese history and participate in its exhibitions, cultural performances and other events. The centre is expected to function similarly to cultural and language centres founded by other foreign countries in the Thai capital; for instance, Germany's Goethe Institute and France's Alliance Française.

The head of China's Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, Wu Bangguo, together with Thailand's House Speaker Chai Chidchob presided at the foundation stone-laying ceremony and both gave speeches representing their country. The ceremony was attended by a number of Chinese and Thai representatives.

Both speeches noted that China and Thailand have already conducted cultural exchanges such as concerts and other musical activities, and the new cultural centre in Bangkok will act as the door for Thais to access more Chinese art and culture.

This centre will have Chinese-applied architecture with a Chinese-style roof. The interior will be designed to have space to hold exhibitions and cultural performances, and a library along with a Chinese language centre will also be on the premises, according to Thai Culture Minister Niphit Intharasombat.

Thailand and China bilaterally agreed to set up their cultural centres in the other's country to promote and support cultural relations, which is for the mutual benefits of both nations in terms of creating ties and building knowledge among their peoples.

"The centre will be useful for Thais to have knowledge and learn more about China. It will be like a one-stop service for all, as there will be such as a language centre and kung fu teaching, as well as other activities to be held," Mr Niphit said.

He said Thailand is currently discussing the budget to build its cultural centre in China. Thai-Chinese associations initially proposed the Thai Culture Ministry to first spend its budget on the construction, whereas the associations will later raise funds for this purpose. It will further be discussed with ministry officials, Mr Niphit said. (MCOT online news)
