Thailand's 19 districts in 3 provinces warned as prone to landslides
BANGKOK, Nov 10 - Nineteen districts in three of Thailand's southern provinces have been warned as being risk-prone for landslides due to heavy rainfall level of at least 100 millimetres, according to the Mineral Resources Department (MRD).
Nakhon Si Thammarat, Surat Thani and Trang are the three provinces as the Meteorological Department forecasts yet more rainfall over the 100 milimetres alredy registered was likely in the area, MRD director-general Pornthip Puncharoen said.
In Nakhon Si Thammarat, the districts of Phipun, Chawang, Phrommakhiri, Ron Phibun, Lan Saka, Nopphitam, Thung Song, Sichon are worrisome as the soil there has previously absorbed much water already. Landslides are likely to happen again in Khanom district although such an incident recently occurred, covering about a 6km distance.
For Surat Thani, Tha Chana, Wiang Sa, Chaiya, Ban Na San, Wipawadee districts are of concern for the landslides, while those in Trang province are its provincial seat, Huai Yot, Nayong, Yan Ta Khao, and Palian districts.
According to Mrs Pornthip, 60,450 villages in 51 provinces are at risk of landslides. Geography, the amount of rainfall beyond which the soil can no longer absorb water are factors causing such an incident, while another reason for the rising risk is partly manmade change in the land surface for agriculture and housing, which causes steep slopes prompting easier landslides.
