Cyber vandals hack tribute site for teen
Police had to step in to get Facebook administrators to remove offensive photos from
a page set up in tribute to Melbourne teenager Cameron Lowe who was bashed to death.
The RIP Cameron Lowe Facebook page, which had close to 4000 members on Tuesday
afternoon, was hacked by cyber vandals who posted pornographic and gruesome photos
that stayed on the site for much of the day.
The photos were removed early on Tuesday evening after Victoria Police Homicide
detectives contacted Facebook administrators in the United States, a police
spokeswoman said.
Cameron, 17, fell into a coma hours after being punched in the head about midnight
on Saturday and died on Monday afternoon in The Alfred hospital after being taken
off life support.
Members of the Facebook page were disgusted by the photos.
"Those pictures were such a disgrace, people need to grow up and have some respect
for Cameron's friends and family," one member wrote.
Another wrote: "U sicko's there a mother, father, brother or sister grieving out
there and u do this SHAME ON U, i hope bites u back."
Cameron has been remembered on the page as a good-looking boy with a dry wit.
"I loved the way he would make a concerned comment and then back it up with some dry
sarcasm," his friend, Donna Spink, wrote.
"He was a funny guy ... and very cute too."
His aunt, Julie Lowe Lim, wrote: "I have the same thoughts as Donna. But those eyes
and that cheeky gorgeous smile would usually get him out of any trouble."
Cameron was the second oldest of eight children, a former Drouin Secondary College
student who left school at the start of 2009 and wanted to become a baker, according
to his Aunt Julie.
He was employed at a Hungry Jack's restaurant with his older brother and was walking
home from the Pakenham outlet after a few drinks on Saturday night with his brother
and friends, when they became involved in an altercation with a group of youths.
One of them is believed to have punched Cameron, causing him to hit his head on the
road.
His friends did not know how badly hurt he was, but he wrote several disturbing
messages on his Facebook page after he got home, in the early hours of Sunday.
"im sore :'( ... Dunno what happened but my jaw hurts ... all I wanna do is cry," he
said.
"... I must be drunk .... All I know is my head hurts."
His final post was "Sore :'(" shortly after 2am.
The next day, his older brother found him in his bed not breathing and performed
CPR, but Cameron was declared dead about 24 hours later.
A 17-year-old boy handed himself in to police on Monday, but was released pending
further inquiries. No charges have been laid.
