Mottaki: Iran hoping to see idea of Asian Union realized
Foreign Minister Manouchehr said Iran hoped all Asian countries supported the idea of formation of the Asian Union so that the old continent experienced a better convergence.
Making the remark at the sideline of the 28th meeting on compilation of the Caspian Sea legal regime’s convention, he said the convention covered many areas of cooperation among the sea’s five littoral states including environment protection, security, energy, aquatics and fighting smuggling.
Turning to the 9th Ministerial Conference of the Asia Cooperation Dialogue which opened in Tehran yesterday, the foreign minister pointed to the proposal of Iran’s President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on formation of the Asian Union and said the continent should mover in direction of further convergence.
Noting that other continents all had unions for themselves, he said Asia, as the most populous continent in the world which has the most significant role in world’s economy, should form a union as well.
He noted that during the past one year in which Iran has been directing the Asia Cooperation Dialogue organization, it has made programs towards the achievement of this objective.
President Ahmadinejad on Monday called for the creation of an Asian union as delegates from 31 countries huddled here to work for further convergence the continent.
