94 Taliban militants, 14 troops, 28 civilians killed in northwest Pakistan
Peshawar, Aug 5 (PPI) - Pakistan's military says 94 Taliban militants, 14 troops and 28 civilians were killed in past week in fighting in northwestern Swat Valley.
Fighting erupted in tourist region a week ago, threatening a fragile peace deal between the government and militants,
"The operation will continue till objective of clearing area of militants is achieved," local military commander Brigadier Zia Anjum Bodla told newsmen Monday in Mingora, Swat.
"Some 94 militants were killed in ongoing operation and 14 security forces were martyred. Also, 28 civilians died in violence, which is very unfortunate," he said.
Bodla said militants were "attacking security forces, setting ablaze schools and harming local population. We defused eight bombs on Saturday alone," he said. "Army showed restraint following May 21 peace deal between militants and provincial government. But militants violated the agreement consistently," he added.
