Deputy PM Sanan may meet ousted PM Thaksin in Norway

BANGKOK, Nov 6 -- Thailand’s Deputy Prime Minister Sanan Kajornprasart may discuss political situation in the country and his plan for a reconciliation process with ousted prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra in Norway later Saturday, according to Thaksin’s legal adviser Noppadol Pattama.

Maj-Gen (Ret) Sanan will preside at the presentation of an ancient tripidok or Lord Buddha’s teachings ceremony which will be held at a Thai temple in Norway. Mr Thaksin has also been invited by the abbot to attend the ceremony.

Preparations for the two men to meet and discuss the current political situation and attempts by Gen Sanan to bring about reconciliation in Thailand were made earlier, Mr Noppadol said.

Although he is optimistic regarding the outcome of the meeting, the task of ridding social divisiveness does not depend on both men but on the government and “those who hold power in Thailand”.

If the latter do not support the reconciliation programme or do not want the people to enjoy genuine democracy then the meeting would probably be futile, he said.

Ousted in a Sept 2006 coup, Mr. Thaksin now lives in self-imposed exile overseas. He has remained abroad in the face of a two-year prison sentence for violating the Constitution while in power over a land purchase deal by his former wife, and several court cases against him are also pending.
