Thailand’s flood death toll rises to 140

SONGKHLA, Nov 5 – Thailand’s flood-related death toll rose to 140 overall nationwide with about 30 provinces remaining submerged, the Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department reported.

Floods in the upper part of the country caused the death of 110 persons and another 30 deaths were reported in floods in the South triggered heavy downpours due to the influence of a tropical depression.

From Oct 10 to Nov 5, 39 provinces in the North, Northeast and the Central regions were affected by flooding with 19 provinces remaining under water.

From October 30 to November 5, 11 southern provinces have been flooded, the department reported.

In the southern province of Songkhla, locals in Singnakorn district fear a possible recurrence of landslides which killed five people including a three-year-old twin and a seven-year-old girl on Nov 1.

The landslide triggered by heavy rain destroyed five homes. A victims’ family member said the accident occurred for about ten minutes. People are still shocked and frightened when it rains after three family members were killed.

Meanwhile, as local authorities were clearing the mud that slid down Thursday in Khanom district of Nakhon Si Thammarat, local residents remain worried and fear over a second possible landslide because of the incessant heavy rains triggered some soft ground at nearby mountains to crumble over a one-kilometre-long distance.

However, officials are monitoring the situation and on high alert to immediately warn locals about possible landslide.

In a related development, workers of PTT’s Gas separation plant used a ship to tow another ship transporting 400 tonnes of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), swept away by a tropical depression and powerful wind and waves to a sandbar Thursday evening while it was heading to Surat Thani to deliver gas to customers in 14 southern provinces.
