Bodies 9 fishermen wash ashore on Pattani beach
PATTANI, Nov 4 - The corpses of nine fishermen were recovered on a beach in the southern border province of Pattani on Thursday, according to police, who believe they drowned as their fishing boat sank during this week's storms.
Yaring district police commander Pol Col Chakkrapob Taorit said local residents found the nine swollen bodies near the beach and that the corpses were sent to the district hospital for autopsies.
Initially, police saw no wounds on the bodies, but their skin was peeling from being in seawater for long period, said Col Chakkrapob.
The chief said the nine men may have been dead for three days and that they were crew of a fishing boat which capsized while a tropical depression swept over their fishing grounds, causing high waves and strong wind on November 1.
Col Chakkrapob said he has sought cooperation from Pattani Provincial Fisheries Office and the Pattani Fisheries Association to help verify the identity of the nine men, which fishing boat they worked for, and whether there were more boats lost at sea during this period.
The tropical depression in the lower Gulf of Thailand was centred about 160 km east of Songkhla and made landfall over southern provinces of Pattani, Songkhla and Nakhon Si Thammarat on Monday.
The meteorological department had warned people in at risk areas along hill slopes near waterways and in lowlands of possible flash floods, while those living along the eastern south coast should beware of high winds and high surging tides inshore. All ships in the Gulf were to keep ashore during this period. (MCOT online news)
