Red Shirts activity to mark six-month anniversary of end of protest

BANGKOK, Nov 4 – The anti-government 'Red Shirt' United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) plan to hold a ceremony to mark the six-month anniversary of end of the protest at Ratchaprasong on Nov 19, Puea Thai MP Jatuporn Prompan said Thursday.

The Red Shirt activity is scheduled to take place for only an hour, from 6pm to 7pm, and then the group will end their gathering, Red Shirt leader Jatuporn explained.

The planned rally followed Mr Jatuporn's discussion with Somyos Prueksakasemsuk, leader of the UDD June 24 Democracy Group faction.

The event is to mark the six-month anniversary of the security forces operation to regain the area at Ratchaprasong intersection from the Red Shirt protesters on May 19 as well as to commemorate those who lost their lives during the mass gathering.

Meanwhile, Mr Jatuporn said he will go to the Erawan Shrine's Brahma statue to pray to the Hindu God for other detained Red Shirt leaders to be released.

A number of UDD leaders are being detained on terrorism charges after their marathon rally ended May 19 following clashes between protesters and military in the capital. The Red Shirts demanded that the coalition government of Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva step down unconditionally. Overall the clashes left 89 people dead.

Riots in the protest areas were followed by arson which destroyed or damaged more than 30 buildings including the high-end shopping mall CentralWorld. (MCOT online news)
