VP ASKS LIPI TO GIVE NATION OPTIMISM

Jakarta, August 4 (ANTARA) - Vice President Jusuf Kalla said the Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI) should give the nation optimism about the future instead of issuing critical reports all the time.
"Since the beginning of the reform era, LIPI has frequently criticizes the government. It's all right for LIPI to voice criticism but it should at the same time also be able to create optimism," Kalla said in remarks to officially open a LIPI Expo here on Monday.
The vice president said LIPI should think ahead and initiate new research on things that could give added value to agriculture development in Java island.
He said it was feared that in the next three years there would be an economic imbalance in Java and outside Java.
Therefore, Kalla said LIPI should anticipate it because with wider plantation areas outside Java, the economic growth there would increase but in Java it would decrease.
According to the vice president, criticism was necessary but there should be optimism about solution to every problem, and therefore LIPI should have logical thinking.
"We need creative ideas and creative thinkers. Therefore let us try to increase rice production to more than 6 tons per hectare and raise the sucrose content of sugar cane to 12 percent," Kalla said.
