TPP notes significance of South Korean investments.
MOSCOW, November 2 (Itar-Tass) - Vice-president of the Russian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (TPP) Georgy Petrov noted the significance of South Korean investments in the Russian industry.
For Russian-South Korean economic cooperation, it is not so much the absolute trade figures that
are important as long-term investment ties, he said in an interview to
Itar-Tass and the South Korean newspaper JoonAng Ilbo ahead of President
Dmitry Medvedev's visit to that country.
"If we take a look at the South Korean investments in the Russian
economy by sectors, it is very important that a considerable portion of
them goes to the processing industry, in the first place car-making and
construction. Of course, we're interested that money is mostly invested in
the industry," Petrov said.
"I regard the new Hyundai factory in St. Petersburg an excellent
example of cooperation, when a plant to produce car parts was build within
the framework of one project. Samsung and a number of other companies are
building capacities to produce household equipment which employ Russian
workers and Korean management, while quality control is effected in South
Korea which supplies parts.
"Our wishes boil down to the geography of South Korea's investments
covering not only Moscow, St. Petersburg and central Russia, but also
expanding to the regions of Russia's Far East, East Siberia, whose
development is currently a priority for the country's leadership.
"So far, such examples have been few, although we can name gas
production on Sakhalin, where South Korean companies operate very well.
Contacts between Gazprom and Kogas are very promising. Of course, the
construction of the LNG plant on Sakhalin opens new opportunities for
cooperation with South Korea in the gas sphere," Petrov noted.
Among the promising regions and projects for South Korean investments,
the TPP vice-president named Novosibirsk on the Trans-Siberian railway,
the Tomsk research center and Khabarovsk which has an excellent
infrastructure.
"The list of possible investments in Russian-Korean cooperation is
endless, from the constructing of a modern cosmodrome and nuclear power
stations to electric power engineering and the construction of shipyards.
Participate in the construction for the APEC summit in Vladivostok in
2012, in Zarubino, which the oil pipeline will end and where an oil
refinery will be built. Cooperation in agriculture is interesting, too,"
the TPP official said.
